I'm PISSED OFF!!!
Hasn't Vertigo learned ANYTHING from their Sales Charts?!
Take a look at the Times Graphic Novel Bestselling Charts and look out for Vertigo Paperbacks printed on the same crappy shit crap toilet paper doesn't deserve even the term Newsprint Paper!
What I'm saying:
If you like cool Comics in general, read Trade Paperbacks(not monthly's only) and are not into super-hero or manga ONLY, then you probably have at least at some time picked up Vertigo TPB like The Invisibles, Transmetropolitan, Y: The Last Man, Fables or Loveless. And at the time you received the softcover edition of your read of choice, you opened the book and....
"oh my god, that's why it was so damn cheap, look at the bleached colors. What kind of fucking shit paper is THAT?! This looks horrible......Do I really want to read something as supposedly awesome as this Story in this horrible form?!"
Speaking for myself: After having read Invisibles Vol1 and Fables Vol1 on this crap paper, I never wanted to read a good, new comic with modern coloring(I think 60's comic would go ok with that paper) again like that. So I didn't even try Y: The Last man, because I knew it would be the same crap paper quality and was SO happy to find out that there will be a deluxe hardcover if Y: The Last Man in the near future. And BOY! THAT Edition EARNS the Name Deluxe. Perfectly fit Paper(same quality as absolute watchmen and absolute Crisis on Infinite Earths) and beautiful choice of Harcover material and inprinting.
Somewhat earlier I already bought Fables Vol1, hated the format with the lower-than-newsprint coloring, liked the story, bought Vol2 put it on my shelf......and then it stood there....for months......THEN I saw on amazon that Vertigo was putting out a Deluxe Hardcover Edition of Fables in a Single Book in September(collecting the already bought Volume 1 & 2 TPBs).
I then immediately pre-ordered it and threw away both of my shitty Fable SCs (to be honest, I gave the first one away to someone that asked me for non-superhero comic recommendation) and now am waiting for september to read the second volume in better quality.
Same with Loveless. I am horny for the story, but I can't get myself to read a dark story so brilliantly brooding and moody drawn with this bleached out blacks.
When I saw that they were reprinting Transmetropolitan Trade Paperbacks and with a higher pricing, I knew: They learned from the past and these will be on better paper.
Probably everybody knew, because it sold brilliantly. Same as the Y: The Last Man Deluxe HC.
But.....seems I was wrong again, it wasn't like the LEARNED! Look at the pricing on "Unknown Soldier TPB Vol1" coming out in september! And "The Unwritten"...both series have FANTASTIC Meta-Critic Scores(especially IGN.com...almost all Issues are rated higher than 9.0) and are priced 7.99$. 7.99$ for 144 Pages? I can guess what sort of paper that will be. WHY God, WHYYY?!??
If Madame Xanadu(12.99$ for 240 pages softcover) will have this TOILET Paper, I will send directly to Vertigo in New York with some not very polite greetings written directly on the Frontcover! I swear!
You know...The Preacher TPB Vol1....it's 200 Pages from Vertigo, they printed it ages ago, I paid only 11$. The paper was not exactly high quality, but it was very much OK. I really hope it will be like that with Madame Xanadu. For Unknown Soldier and The Unwritten I have very little hope and will definitely boycott that, until it will be better quality.
And I want YOU to join me and
DON'T BUY any of the super-cheap Vertigo TPBs!
Maybe one day they will learn......
